Why is the ER of a Hospital Important?
An emergency room is the heart of a hospital. The services and procedures that are performed in the emergency room are often the ones that mean the difference between life and death.
In many situations, the visit to the emergency room is their only contact with a hospital.
When a person becomes seriously ill or is involved in some type of accident, they are taken to the emergency room.
If someone is injured in a car accident, the emergency room is where they are taken. Frequently, accident victims are in critical condition and require urgent medical attention.
The staffs of both physicians and nurses are specially trained to respond to emergency situation. Every hospital that has an emergency room is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The doctors, nurses, and other staff who work in emergency rooms are always available to treat patients immediately. Once the patient is stabilized, they are moved to other areas where they receive further treatment.
When a patient who has possibly suffered a heart attack is treated in the emergency room, the ER staff will do their best to stabilize the patient’s condition and then the patient can be moved to the cardiac intensive care unit.
Since every emergency is different, the staff of the emergency room never knows what the next patient will require. The ER must be equipped to deal with all types of emergencies.
Emergency rooms must have the proper equipment and staff to deal with every type of emergency. Every member of the ER staff (doctors, nurses and other staff) must be able to assess the patient quickly, thoroughly, and accurately. There is no room for mistakes or error.
If a patient exhibits the symptoms of chest pain, the emergency room staff must be able to determine very quickly, if the patient is suffering from a possible life-threatening heart attack or whether the patient is suffering from uncomfortable indigestion.
Did the accident victim tear tendons or ligament, sprain his/her ankle or is there actually a broken bone in the leg? Does the patient have a minor bump on the head or is the head injury potentially more serious?
It is absolutely vital that every member of the can assess any of these situations and make an accurate decision. In the emergency room, there is NO room for error. The medical training standards for emergency room staff are very high and rigorous.
A hospital’s reputation is based on its ability to accurately diagnose and treat patients correctly and to obtain the best results for the treatment provided.
An emergency room that is well run and efficient probably is indicative of a well run and efficient hospital.
The philosophy and standards of the emergency room are a direct reflection on the hospital as a whole. If a patient receives quality medical care in the emergency room, then the patient should be able to expect quality medical treatment in the rest of the hospital.
