What Causes Poisonous Insect Bites?

Insect bites and stings are very common> They are seldom cause for worry, unless a person is allergic the the insect’s bite or sting. But there are several insects in the United States that can produce serious bites and stings.

It is important to understand and recognize what has bitten or stung a person and what to do to help.

Some of the poisonous bites and stings, if left untreated can cause permanent disfigurement and even death.

Honey Bees

Honeybees are not normally aggressive. They will sting if they are attacked or stepped on (if you are barefoot).

They will sting if they feel a threat to their hive.

Honey bees have a stinger that has barbs. The bee’s stinger will continue to inject poison into the victim until it is totally removed.

How do you treat a Honey Bee Sting?

Remove the stinger> You can either try to pinch or scrape it off the skin. Quickly removing the stinger is important.

Try applying a cold pack to the area of the sting.

After pain begins to subside, the area of the sting may itch. Rubbing or scratching the area makes it worse.

If any of the following symptoms are noticed: shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling in the face, or hives appear, or any other non localized reaction, suspect a potential allergic reaction. You need to call 911 immediately.

The big boys and girls – Wasps, Hornets and Yellow Jackets

Hornets and Yellow Jackets both belong to the Wasp family.

Their sting can be either gentle or aggressive and it depends on the particluar.

If any of these are handled, stepped on if they think their hive is in danger, they will sting.

They can sting repeatedly.

Brown Recluse Spider

The Brown Recluse spider is a small brown spider.

This spider likes to hide in clothing, shoes, gloves, closets and in other places that are not frequently visited.

They have what looks like a shape of a violin or fiddle on their back.

The bite of this spider sometimes is not painful or it goes un-noticed until it becomes a serious skin issue.

You should seek immediate medical attention if you notice a pimple or blood blister that becomes worse in a period of a few hours and looks similar to a boil.

If the bite area is untreated, the wound can become gangrenous and potentially life threatening.

The best treatment is immediate professional medical care.
