How to Cope with a Chronic Illness?
When you have a chronic illness, it means that you do not have any idea if or when you may get better. Your illness may never go away. When suffering from a chronic illness you are often tired and in pain.
Your physical appearance and/or your physical abilities can be affected. It may prevent you from working, causing you financial anxiety and stress. You may also feel angry, questioning why this has happened.
It doesn’t just affect you. Your family members and friends are also affected and influenced by the persistent health changes of a loved one.
A person can easily become isolated in these circumstances. The changes that occur to your body and your abilities can affect your self-image and make it harder for you to interact with others. Stress can take over, leading to frustration, anger, hopelessness and sometimes even depression.
When you are diagnosed with a chronic illness, seek help. You should build a support network as soon as you feel less able to cope and before you feel helpless.
A trained counselor or mental health care provider can help you develop strategies to regain a feeling of control and draw up a treatment plan for your specific needs. If depression is present, they can give you additional medications, other than those treating your physical illness, to help regulate your mood.
Support groups are also useful to provide ways to deal with your illness. You will also gain strength realizing that you are not facing your illness alone.
How do You Take Control?
1. Accept your illness and help you to face the new challenges in your life.
2. Like yourself as you are today and take pride in what you can accomplish NOW.
3. Take complete responsibility for your health and never overlook all the help you can get.
4. Research and become an expert on your illness. Go to your medical appointments prepared with questions.
5. Let go of the Why Me attitude.
Always remember, you are still the same person and your illness should not have control over your life.
Learning how you manage a chronic illness is hard. Once you are able to find a way to do this, while still being you, will help you to gain strength and will enable you to get back the positive physical, emotional and spiritual outlook that you had on life before your illness.
