Fighting Food Contamination

Food Contamination

Food contamination can affect anyone. It is not rare to hear stories of food products being recalled because they became contaminated with dangerous bacteria or chemicals, often after killing or seriously harming several people. But the problem doesn’t stop at the factory: inadequate sanitation measures and negligence at restaurants can lead to disease-causing microbes or poisonous chemicals entering food. Fortunately, victims of food contamination can stand up for their rights.

Most people will experience some form of food contamination at some point in their lives, although in most cases it only results in a relatively short illness. Usually this is because care was not taken to ensure bacteria did not spread in food, such as neglecting to adequately refrigerate certain foods. In other cases, however, it can prove fatal.

Food can become contaminated with chemicals as well. Packaged or processed foods can become contaminated while at the factory. It is not rare for food in restaurants to become contaminated with cleaning products or other chemicals. The effects of chemical food poisoning and the appropriate treatment vary wildly depending on the chemicals involved, making it difficult to treat.

Microbial food contamination is not limited to bacteria that cause minor stomach problems. In addition to gastrointestinal diseases, food can become contaminated by bacteria that affect the body in much more pervasive ways, as well. Some bacteria and other microbes produce waste products that can cause neurological damage, even after the bacteria have been killed by heating.

Restaurateurs and food producers have a responsibility to the public to ensure that their products are safe for consumption. Safety procedures, such as sanitation and sterilization, are standardized and required by law. In addition, restaurants and food producers are required to follow strict refrigeration and storage procedures to ensure bacteria do not spread and to prevent other forms of contamination.

If you or someone you love has been harmed by food contamination, you should not have to pay thousands of dollars in medical bills for an illness caused by another person. You have the right to seek compensation from the people responsible to make up for your medical bills, losses, and pain and suffering.

Since publication of the previous edition of this successful book, there have been many advances in the field of food science and metal analysis and these have been taken into account of in compiling this new edition. Data on metal levels in foods and diets have been updated with information gathered from recent international literature. More than 80% of the text has been completely rewritten and, as the addition of a new subtitle suggests, greater account is taken than in earlier editions of the importance of the nutritional properties of many of the metals that we consume.

In the compilation of this cutting-edge new edition, full account has been taken of the significant advances in the ready availability of multi-element analysis, improved sample preparation procedures and a growing interest in the content of chemical species in foods. Details of several metals, not considered in depth in previous editions but now widely used in the electronic and chemical industries, have also been included.

The third edition of Metal Contamination of Food is an essential reference book for food industry personnel, including those working in food processing, formation and ingredients, packaging, quality control and food safety. Nutritionists, public analysts and chemists will also find much of great use within the covers of this book. Libraries and laboratories worldwide in all universities and research establishments where food science and technology, nutrition and chemistry are studied and taught should
